TEST STANDARDS FOR ACOUSTICAL PRODUCTS

There are numerous testing standards used to rate the acoustical qualities of construction materials and building elements.

Tests are conducted in a strictly recorded setting.
These standards are produced by a US-based company called ASTM International and are available for download on their website at: www.astm.org

Testing Methods for Acoustical Ratings:

  • ASTM E90, Standard Test Method for Laboratory Measurement of Airborne Sound Transmission Loss of Building Partitions and Elements.
  • ASTM E336, Standard Test Method for Measurement of Airborne Sound Insulation in Buildings.
  • ASTM E413, Classification for Rating Sound Insulation.
  • ASTM E492, Standard Test Method for Laboratory Measurement of Impact Sound Transmission Through Floor-Ceiling Assemblies Using the Tapping Machine.
  • ASTM E989, Standard Classification for Determination of IMPACT Insulation Class (IIC).
  • ASTM E1007, Standard Test Method for Field Measurement of Tapping Machine Impact Sound Transmission Through Floor-Ceiling Assemblies and Associated Support Structures.
  • ASTM E2179, Standard Test Method for Laboratory Measurement of the Effectiveness of Floor Coverings in Reducing Impact Sound Transmission Through Concrete Floors.
