Bill Black, President,

With over 44 years experience Bill is a passionate champion for the construction industry who is committed to challenging the status quo using his characteristic frankness and humour to foster healthy dialogue.

Bill’s presentation will include:

  • An overview of the Alberta and Calgary market and the nature of work that is in place.
  • Future workforce realities and the work that CCA is engaged in.
  • Race to the bottom is not winning. Has industry lost its way? Is it even motivated to turn it around?
  • Society needs a strong construction industry. If we do not build it who will?
  • Will the youth of today even want to work long term in the industry that has evolved on our watch?

Concrete Prep: Getting the Basics Right to Avoid Costly Delays

THE GAP BETWEEN DIV 3 & DIV 9 with Chris Maskell, CEO, NFCA

Concrete slabs poured and finished at the beginning of a build will not align with the floor covering installer’s requirements for flatness and smoothness during late-stage construction. Why is this and what needs to be done to ensure that concrete surfaces provided by the constructor are acceptable, thereby eliminating extras, disputes, and delays.

STRAIGHTEDGE & FLOOR FLATNESS with Graeme Rosen
Director of Training, NFCA

It is the responsibility of the floor covering installer to verify a flat and acceptable surface prior to installing flooring. Verification can be done several ways. One of them is the 10’ straightedge method – a test that has been misunderstood for many years. Graeme will discuss assessing surface flatness with this in mind.

MANAGING CONCRETE PLACEMENT & FINISHING with Nelson Samayoa, New Gen Floor Systems

New technology and methods to monitor concrete placement that provide real-time data to the contractor. Methods on assessing the flatness of placed concrete; bringing the concrete within the required tolerances; and healthy concrete curing to minimize, and even prevent cracking, curling.
